All of the games give options to pick levels from different phases – see below for more information.

Phase 3 covers the sounds that the children would have been focusing on in Foundation and links to our Red phonics reader books.

Phase 4 would also have been covered at the end of Foundation. In this phase children learn to blend two or three adjacent consonants at the beginning, middle and end of words. It is a good phase to revisit and links to our Yellow and Blue phonic reader books.

Phase 5 is taught throughout year 1 and into the start of year 2. This is where children learn different ways spell the same sound. This links to our Green, Orange and Turquoise phonic reader.

Good Morning, another week that has flown by!

Today we are going to practice some of the maths we have learnt this week. You will need your red exercise books, a pencil and your collection of small objects.

Once you have counted the number of cubes draw your number into your red book and write the number of tens and ones. Have a look at my example below.

Harmony

Geometry/Harmony

This week we are going to look at the work of Dutch artist Mondrian. Have a look at some of his paintings below, which he created about 100 years ago:

Talk about what you see to someone at home. Did you notice there are lots of horizontal and vertical black lines that make a sort of grid? What shapes can you see? Which colours did Mondrian use?

Mondrian created lots of paintings in this style, using mainly red, blue and yellow. We call these the primary colours. (We’ll be learning more about these in our art lesson next week!)

Can you create a piece of art using the straight lines, shapes and colours that Mondrian used? You could use felt tips, paint or collage – or even try using Lego! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Thursday 21st January

Looking forward to seeing you at 9.15 for English and 11 am for phonics. In this afternoon’s catch up session I’m going to read you a story today!

I’m renaming our Friday catch up session as “Fun Friday” – I loved the jokes last week…so tomorrow I thought we could share our pets. If you can’t manage to get them in front of the camera then you could just share something about them. If you don’t have a pet then maybe you could draw a picture of your ideal pet and show that!

As you know most traditional tales have a baddy in them!  Below are some examples of a wanted poster for the wolf.

On the last page of the Rapunzal story, if you look carefully you might spot some wanted posters!

Today we would like you to make a wanted poster for the witch in Rapunzel!  You can either print out the template below or make your own one in your red book.  Remember to keep your work neat please and colour in with pencil.

Here are some examples of posters made for a fairy tale wolf which might help you work out what to put on your witch wanted poster.

Wednesday 20th January

Good morning, I look forward to seeing you at 9.15 for maths and 11.00 for phonics. Our maths this morning continues with place value and it if you have a printer you might like to print out these arrow cards. We might not use them much in the session but they would be useful to reinforce today’s learning.

Writing Numbers to 40

Ask your child to explore how many ways they can count the number of dots on the cards in the In Focus task (it would be helpful to draw the pattern of dots on a piece of paper). Prompt them by circling groups of dots, asking if it might be helpful to do this.

Once you have counted the dots, ask them if they know how to write the number 22.

As you work your way through the numbers below encourage pupils to count in twos, fives and tens.

Now have a go at the practice questions below and then complete pages 5 & 6 in your workbook!

Science

Building Things – Which material could I use to build a wall?

In this lesson, they will be discussing different materials and their properties. You will be analysing different objects and identifying the material’s properties. You will be building and creating mini walls and using them in an experiment in the next lesson, ‘Is the Wall I’ve Built Waterproof?’. If you would like to take part in this you can choose to build all or one wall. You will need either playdough, hay or straw, twigs or lolly sticks, sugar cubes, plastic bricks, some glue or some sticky tape. If you do not have these things, don’t worry because they will be conducting the experiment for you to see.

Here is the lesson. You could try the experiment yourself with any of the suggested materials that you have at home.

Next draw this table your book. Then have a go at finding some different items from around the house made from different materials. Then write or draw them into the correct column in your table.

Tuesday 19th January

Good Morning everyone! Just a reminder that there will be live phonics, English and our catch up today! In our catch up we will be doing some handwriting so make sure you have your handwriting book and a sharp pencil! See you later!

Also there is the “cuppa and a catch up” session for any parents or carers who would like to have a chat or ask any questions at 11.30 am.

English

Last week we started reading Rapunzel by Bethan Woolvin which is a lovely alternative version of the story.  Today we are going to read on.  

If you are unable to join the live session at 9.15 today then please watch this video.  

Then see if you can order the pictures on this sheet, number them 1-8 then cut them out and stick them in your red book.  You will need two pages.  Stick the first 4 in the blank space of one page and the second 4 in the blank space of the second page.  Underneath start to write a sentence to go with each picture.   If you don’t have a printer you could draw the pictures instead.

Keep it neat, cut out carefully, stick in neatly and when you write your sentence remember to leave finger spaces and start each sentence with a capital letter and end with a full stop.  Also remember to use a capital letter for Rapunzel as it is a name!

Here is one that I started. 

If your child finds writing a bit tricky you could make the sentences simpler than the one in the photo e.g.

  1.  Rapunzel was trapped in the  tower.
  2. The witch brushed her hair.

Lesson 2 

In this lesson, you will continue to learn about some of the ways in which popular music has changed over the last 60 years. You will learn how the ways in which people listen to music have changed over time and will look more closely at MP3 players and smartphones. We will then listen to some songs from singers and groups from the 1990s to 2020s.

HEADS UP FOR TOMORROWS SCIENCE SESSION

Tomorrow there will be another experiment to try at home.  You will need to get ready some of the materials from this list. Playdough, hay or straw, twigs or lolly sticks, sugar cubes, plastic bricks and some glue or tape. If you don’t have these materials, you can watch the lesson and record your observations of the experiment.

Hello everyone I hope you have had a lovely weekend!

This week we start another live session at 9.15 so we’ll be seeing even more of each other which is just great. I will continue to add Maths and English posts to the blog for those of you who can’t make our live sessions.

Due to further timetable changes at school I will now be able to do “live phonics” on a Tuesday too.

In our catch up session this afternoon we will be playing a maths bingo game so you will need your white board and pen…and of course your brilliant brain!

This week in maths we are beginning to look at larger numbers. 

Helpful Resources:

  • 40 small objects. You can use anything… pasta shapes, lego bricks or small pebbles! (please keep ready for the next few lessons).
  • Ten Frames. You can draw these yourselves on some paper or follow the link below to a printable version.

Tens frames

Have a look at the picture below. If possible provide your child with 23 small

objects.

Can you find out how many pebbles there are? Which is the best way to do this?

It can take a long time to count each pebble individually (one to one correspondence), can you think of a better way?  Let’s use a ten frame to help us. How does the ten frame help us count?

When we count larger numbers it is very helpful to make groups of ten first and then count the ones. Have a go at the practice questions below and then complete pages 1-4 in your Maths No Problem Workbook 2. This is the first time we will be using this book!
