PE

Have a go at these home PE lessons which will help you practice your throwing skills. First try lesson 3- throwing for accuracy and then lesson 10- flat target accuracy. Have fun!

Heads up for tomorrow’s science

You will need some of the materials you used last week to build your wall. Straw, sugar cubes, sticks, lego bricks, etc. Some glue or sticky tape and some scales. In the lesson the teacher uses some balance scales but you could use some kitchen scales. If you prefer you can just watch the video. It does say to build your walls again ready for next week’s experiment which you could do or just remember to build them next week if you’d rather not have your walls hanging around for a week!

Tuesday 2nd February

Good Morning everyone. I look forward to seeing you for our English, phonics and afternoon catch up! This afternoon we will do a little bit more handwriting so you will need your little red book and a sharp pencil!

English

Watch the video of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Whilst it is playing or afterwards see if you can draw a quick story map.  You could do this on your whiteboard or a piece of paper.  Here is one that someone else has done.

Today we are going to focus on your reading.  Please read one of the Jack and the Beanstalk stories.

Please read the simple version to an adult and answer the questions at the end of the story.  You can answer these in your red book – you don’t need to copy out the questions just write the answers in a sentence.

If you are reading green, orange or turquoise books at school then please read the challenging version to an adult.

When you have finished you could draw a picture in the space on the page in your book.

Phonics

If you can’t join in with our live session at 11 then please watch Lesson 22 of the Year 1 Spring Term Lessons where we will review the different ways of spelling the oo sound.

We will then look at some examples of electronic and non-electronic games. You will need a piece of paper and a pencil.

Monday 1st February

I hope you had a lovely weekend! I can’t believe it’s February!

Please join us live for maths, phonics and our catch up. This afternoon we will be focusing on some maths so you will need your white board and pen! We are going to do a little quiz – thank you Hugo for this idea! You will need to practice counting in 2s, 5s and 10s! Have a little go at home – don’t worry if you find it tricky to do your adult can help you in the quiz.

Before our phonics session this morning please could you draw around a grownups hand on a piece of paper and have it nearby when we meet at 11am.

After the session you could play this roll and read game.

Art

We love the wonderful illustrations in the Rapunzel and Little Red texts we have been using for our literacy over the last few weeks. They were created by Bethan Woollvin, who also wrote the stories. Today we will be having a go at making our own drawings inspired by her simple, distinctive style.

Click on the link below to find a step-by-step guide to drawing a wolf created by Bethan herself…

In school we will be making big versions of these and using our colour-mixing skills to create greys and browns to paint them!

Why not try having a go at drawing some other fairytale characters in Bethan’s style? You might find it easiest to start with the round face shape, and don’t forget to add those big, distinctive eyes!

Kandinsky!

Well Meadow 1, this is the third artist you’ve studied this half term and I have to admit, one of my favourites. Thank you for sending in your photos. Next week I will try and combine your work with the children in school to make one beautiful display!

Friday January 29th

Good Morning! I look forward to seeing you for maths, phonics and our catch up. Don’t forget you can dress up for this if you want! In our phonics session you will need to have six pieces of scrap paper – they don’t need to be big, about the size of a post it note (if you have post it notes you could use those).

Maths

In today’s maths lesson we’ll be putting into practice some of the skills we have learnt this week. If you can’t join us at 9.15 for the live session, please download the PDF below to see what you need to do!

Maths Challenge Time!

If you would like a fun challenge have a go at filling in the missing numbers below. You don’t need to record your ideas, just explain your reasoning to an adult!

Phonics

If you can’t join in with our live session at 11 then please watch Lesson 20 of the Year 1 Spring Term Lessons which is a review of this week’s learning.

https://bit.ly/36maD9s

Today in the live lesson we will be learning a couple more tricky words. Here is a sheet that has lots of ideas that might help you learn them. I did send it home at the start of the year but you may have lost or forgotten it.

Harmony

We hope you had fun exploring colour-mixing during your art lesson earlier in the week!

Today we will be looking at the different colours created by Russian artist Kandinsky in one of his most famous paintings. You can see it below and also have a look at this short clip by clicking on the link:

Can you spot some circles that are the primary colours (red, yellow and blue)? Which colours do you think Kandinsky mixed to create some of the other circles?

Now it’s your turn – use paint, crayons, pastels, playdough or felt tips to have a go at creating some concentric circles using your own mixed colours.

Please share a photo of your work at year1@damers.dorset.sch.uk and we will try to join all our pieces of art together to create a class display!

Thursday 28th of January

English

Last week we looked at the villain in Rapunzel, that was the witch and you created a wanted poster for her. This week in Little Red Riding Hood our baddy is the wolf.

We would like you to design a step by step set of instructions on how to catch a wolf! Think about what you might need to help you. Some rope or a cage, a net or some bait to lure him in. Talk through your idea for catching him, read through these examples and then draw and write your instructions. Either use the sheet below or create your own. We are using the time words- First, next, then and finally. Please email us a photo we would love to see your designs and instructions.

Here is an example that has been done for a dragon! You will be doing a shorter one, but it might give you some ideas!

Science

Is the wall I’ve built waterproof?

Today you will be using the walls that you built last week and conducting an experiment to investigate which materials are most appropriate to build a wall, and comparing their condition after being exposed to water.

Like before you can either draw the table that is shown in the lesson or print out this sheet.

Please click on the link below to start the lesson

Beautiful Bird!

Before Christmas (seems like so long ago!) we made bird feeders to hang outside. Esme has been busy making some different ones of her own at home. Look at this cracking photo of a bird feeding on it. I wonder if you can remember what this little bird is called?

Wednesday January 27th

Good morning – I can’t wait to see you at 9.15 for Maths and 11.00 for phonics. Don’t forget to go to Mrs Smith’s assembly at 2.20pm, I know she’s looking forward to seeing you all too.

Maths

Comparing Numbers

Today we are going to be learning how to compare larger numbers. Look carefully at the picture below.

Compare the two numbers. Which number is bigger? How do you know? ‘Let’s Learn’ below will help explain.

Next we’re going to compare three numbers.    37, 22 and 29

TOP TIP! First compare the tens in all three numbers.  Second compare the ones where the tens are the same.

Now place these numbers in order from smallest to largest and vice versa.

Finally, have a go at the guided practice questions below and then complete pages 11 – 14 in your Maths No Problem book.

Maths challenge time

These place-value challenges are designed for those children who are able to complete their workbook job independently. You do not need to record your answers, just have a discussion.  The question ‘How do you know that?’  is a brilliant starting place.

Can you make your own traditional tale keep fit session?

Design it and then spend a minute doing each bit.  You could ask your grown up to try it out too!

Here is an example but I’m sure you’ll have lots of ideas! You don’t have to write it out,  you can just draw quick pictures on a piece of paper or your whiteboard to remind you what to do.
